Are you tired of artificial room sprays filled with chemicals? As an alternative option, gel air fresheners are hands-free, non-toxic, and customizable household deodorizers that can be customized with essential oils to hide or dampen scents in homes, cars, or garages.

DIY Gel Air Freshener

This blog discusses the benefits of DIY gel air fresheners, provides two of the best recipes, offers usage instructions, and presents essential oil blends for various purposes related to gel air fresheners.

What is a Gel Air Freshener?

Gel air fresheners are odour-fighting items made from water, gelatin, essential oils, preservatives, and other gelling ingredients like solvents and liquid bases. They release aroma over time as the gel evaporates, providing continuous freshness without frequent reapplication. These eco-friendly, vibrant air fresheners are safe for hot weather and do not contain hazardous components like synthetic perfumes or phthalates found in commercial home gel deodorizers.

Why Choose a Homemade Gel Air Freshener?

Homemade air freshener gels offer numerous advantages, such as being non-toxic, safe for indoor use, affordable, customizable, environmentally friendly, and a creative and enjoyable way to freshen up.

1. Non-toxic & Safe For Indoor Use

Homemade if made using natural, non-toxic materials. The idea is to avoid harsh chemicals and instead use natural alternatives such as essential oils and baking soda.

2. Budget-Friendly

A gel air freshener is affordable and can last for several weeks. You may also modify the aroma by using different essential oils. This refresher is an inexpensive method to keep your house smelling fresh.

2 Best Homemade Gel Air Freshener Recipes

You can easily make a perfect homemade air freshener with the two best gel air freshener recipes: one with essential oils and the other without gelatin.

Recipe 1: DIY Air Freshener Gel Recipe With Essential Oil

Here, you are about to learn how to make your own gel air freshener at home with an easy recipe including essential oils and gelatin:

Recipe 1: DIY Air Freshener Gel Recipe With Essential Oil

Ingredient

  • Water - 1 cup
  • Unflavored gelatin - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1 tablespoon
  • Essential Oils - 15 to 20 drops
  • Dried flowers (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)

How to Make

  1. First, in a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Now, add the salt and whisk until dissolved.
  3. Now, stir in the gelatin.
  4. Now, remove the mixture from the heat and add the essential oils.
  5. At this point, pour it into a shallow glass mason jar once it has cooled but has not yet gelled.
  6. Now, add food colouring and flowers if using.
  7. Finally, allow it to cool completely before covering it with a vented lid.

Recipe 2: DIY Air Freshener Gel Recipe Without Gelatin

In this recipe, we will learn a DIY gel air freshener without gelatin. We are not using gelatine but use agar-agar instead.

DIY Air Freshener Gel Recipe Without Gelatine

Ingredient

  • Agar-Agar - 2 teaspoons
  • Water - 1 ½ cups
  • Vodka - ½ cup
  • Potassium sorbate - ¼ teaspoon
  • Essential oils - 35 to 60 drops
  • Natural food colouring (optional)
  • Natural essential oil solubilizer (optional) - 35 to 60 drops

How to Make

  1. Mix one cup of warm water with two teaspoons of agar-agar. After thoroughly whisking, let it sit for five minutes.
  2. Bring the water and dissolved agar-agar to a boil in a small saucepan. To make sure the agar-agar is well combined, whisk or stir. When entirely dissolved, remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  3. While the mixture cools, combine the essential oil blend with the natural solubilizer in a separate container. Mix well and keep aside. If the mixture appears hazy, add more solubilizer drop by drop until it becomes transparent. (If you are not using a solubilizer, skip this step.)
  4. Transfer the gel to a large, heat-resistant measuring cup, such as a Pyrex cup or another cup with a spout. This will make it easy to distribute the mixture evenly in each mason jar.
  5. Combine the remaining ½ cup water and ½ cup vodka and whisk thoroughly.
  6. Next, mix the potassium sorbate with the essential oil mixture. Mix thoroughly to ensure that the essential oils are uniformly distributed and that the potassium sorbate pellets are dissolved. If desired, use natural food colouring during this phase as well.
  7. After transferring your air freshener mixture into mason jars, place them in the refrigerator for a minimum of three hours.
  8. If you'd like, place frog lids over the jars once the gels have solidified. As an alternative, you can use the air fresheners without a cover.

How to Use Gel Air Freshener?

Open the gel air freshener's container and set it in a specific location to begin using it. The gel evaporates, releasing its aroma into the air. Use a vented lid or punch holes to release the scent.
