Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP K-30)
Polyvinylpyrrolidone or PVP K 30 is known to be a versatile ingredient that is widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. It is manufactured by a multistep synthesis procedure that ends with polymerization of vinylpyrrolidone in aqueous solution, along with water in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone or PVP K-30 powder is highly soluble in water and many other organic solvents and forms a hard, transparent, glossy film. PVP K 30 is compatible with most of the inorganic salts and numerous resins. It helps in stabilizing emulsions, dispersions and suspensions. Whilst being used as a film former and gels in hair styling products, Polyvinylpyrrolidone can also be used as an emulsion stabilizer in creams, lotions, shampoos, and as a dispersing agent for hair colorants.
