Homemade Soap with Essential Oils Recipe - Step By Step

Step 1: Heat Floral Water

First of all, it’s important to ensure adequate safety measures. Cover your work area with newspaper and put on the gloves. Take 3/4 cup of floral water into a bowl and keep it to heat. Slowly pour the measured 1/4 cup lye into the water, stirring it constantly with a spoon. When the water starts to clear, let it sit while we move to the next step.

Step 2: Add Essential Oils

Take another bowl and add all the three oils together. Heat the mixture in a microwave for about a minute. Check the temperature of the oils – it should be about 120° or so. Lye should also have come down by then to about 120°. Wait for both to cool more – somewhere between 95° and 105°. Temperature is critical while making soap. Too low and it’ll come together quickly, but be coarse and crumbly.

 Add Essential Oils

Step 3: Mix Essential Oils & Lye

When both the lye and oils are at the correct temperature, pour the oils into a mixing bowl. Slowly add the lye, stirring for full 5 minutes, until it’s all mixed. It’s important to get lye in contact with the soap as much as possible. After 5 minutes of spoon stirring, use an immersion blender. The soap mixture will lighten in color and become thick. See, if it looks like vanilla pudding, then you’re good to go.

 Mix Essential Oils & Lye

Step 4: Pour Mixture In Mould

Take this mixture and pour it into mould and cover with plastic wrap. Place it in an old towel and wrap it up. This will keep the residual heat in and begin the saponification process - the process of the base ingredients becoming soap.

 Pour Mixture In Mould

Step 5: Cool & Wait

Check your soap after 24 hours. If it’s still warm or soft, let it sit for another 12-24 hours. When it becomes cold and firm, turn it out onto a piece of baking rack. Allow soap to cure for 4 weeks or so. Ensure that you turn it over once a week so that all the sides are exposed to air.

 Cool & Wait

Step 6: Store in Glass Jar

When your soap is fully cured, keep it in an airtight container or wrap it in a wax paper. Handmade soap has this tendency to create its own glycerin, by pulling moisture from the air. It should be wrapped to keep it away from attracting dust along with the moisture.

Keep Mould Refrigerated
